Each quarter since 2005, The Senior’s Choice has honored one of our members’ caregivers with our distinguished “Caregiver of the Season” award, recognizing their dedication, passion, compassion, and outstanding achievement. The remarkable individual listed below is the kind of person who will be caring for your loved one when you hire a member of The Senior’s Choice to provide in-home care.

Lynn O’Brien

Around here most people just call it THE STORM. On October 29, Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast coast with a vengeance never before seen in our lifetimes. As anyone who has watched the news has seen, nowhere was it more violent and damaging than in NJ. While there are many stories of heroism and compassion coming from the storm, ours is a story of one caregiver who went “above and beyond,” who demonstrated the kind of caring that has reminded us of why we went into this business in the first place.

Lynn O’Brien has a big heart. She’s the kind of person who views taking care of others as her mission in life. Lynn has a history of taking care of others. She has often reached out to her son’s friends when they needed a help, going so far as to become the guardian of one teenager.
Lynn joined Personal Touch approximately six years ago and has cared for several clients, all of whom sing her praises. But when Hurricane Sandy hit, Lynn surpassed even her own “normal” high standards.

As Sandy raged and Lynn’s power went out, one of her first thoughts was of her client, Dianna, who lives alone in an apartment. She phoned Dianna who was in tears, in the dark, cold and scared to death. Without a second thought, Lynn went to get her. She brought Dianna back to her own home and took care of her for several days. She introduced Dianna to her family, fed her, and kept her warm and safe and dry. Lynn even told me, “We all had a good time!” When Dianna’s power came back on, Lynn took her home, cleaned out her refrigerator of all the spoiled food, took the debris to the dump and re-stocked it. She did all of this, not because she was scheduled to do it, not because it was her job, but because of that big heart I mentioned earlier.

When I first called Lynn to say “Thank You” for taking such good care of Dianna, she said to me, “I could never leave Dianna alone at her home with no electricity and no heat. I didn’t think anything of it. Of course, I went and got her.” She didn’t seem to realize how extraordinary her actions were.
Lynn and Dianna have a special relationship. Lynn has said of Dianna, “She’s a doll, we talk about everything. We laugh, we cry. Whenever she needs me, I go.” Likewise, Dianna says of Lynn: “She’s one of a kind. I just love her to death!”

Lynn O’Brien is an outstanding caregiver, but more than that she is a remarkable person. We here at Personal Touch are lucky to work with her.
